In this project we worked on the topic of autonomous driving with the main focus on”Communication from the autonomous vehicle”. When autonomous vehicles will take a big part of road traffic, a communication problem between machine and human will be born. In special situations, which are not regulated by the traffic regulations, a communication from the driver to other drivers or pedestrians is necessary. How should this work without a driver?
Through road traffic observations we have set up a list of situations in which communication of the driver is necessary. In addition, several technical solution ideas were generated as to how the communication could be carried out by the vehicle itself. This should be as intuitive as possible and should therefore be directly understandable for other road users. A technical challenge here is a guaranteed function of communication in the light and in the dark and in bad weather conditions, such as in rain or snow.
